MEG Bushland Retreat
Entry to MEG

The MEG Cooperative is a 5-hectare property bordering the McKenzie River in Wartook, Victoria. It includes an old house that originally had termite-damaged hardwood framing, dirt floors, and asbestos walls. Over the years, members have renovated it by removing the asbestos, laying concrete floors, and replacing affected framing with treated pine beams.

The house has no electricity connection, so stays feel like a step back in time, with cooking on open fires and a wood-fired water heater.

Formally registered as M.E.G. Conservation Co-Operative Society Limited with Consumer Affairs Victoria, MEG Coop now has about 40 shareholders. Some have been members since 1971, including children and grandchildren of originals, plus new members who share a love of nature and can apply to join.

Located just north of Wartook, the property offers mountain views, creek frontage, and a varied history. Once cleared for grazing, it has been restored into a conservation area through member efforts.

From the start, we’ve held regular working bees to clear rubbish, control weeds, and plant native species, creating spaces for private camping.

Beyond work, MEG Coop fosters community through activities like hiking, campfires, and social events in one of Victoria’s scenic regions.

The cooperative is run by a Board of Directors, and we encourage active members to join the board. We hold online meetings about every two months, plus an annual general meeting online.
